För sin bok The European Game: The Sectrets of European Football Success (Arena Sport) studerade Daniel Fieldsend europeiska fotbollsklubbars framgångsrecept under tre månaders resande på kontinenten.

Religion and sport: New angles on an important area of research

Rebecca Alpert is Professor of religion, and in her new book Religion and Sports: An Introduction and Case Studies (Columbia University Press) Dagmar Dahl recognizes thoughts from her own studies of sport and religion. The many case studies in the book makes it suitable as textbook in sport studies as well as religious and social sciences.

Roddsporthistoria och radiosporthistoria – två böcker i en

I sin bok Six Minutes in Berlin: Broadcast Spectacle and Rowing Gold at the Nazi Olympics (University of Illinois Press) berättar Michael J. Socolow dels om det amerikanska OS-laget i rodd 1936, dels om radiomediets genomslag 1936 som rapportör av idrottsliga nyheter. Materialet borde nog, menar vår recensent Christian Widholm, fördelats över två böcker.

An interesting and much-needed book that could have done better

Innovation and entrepreneurship, social or not, in a sports setting is a new field within sport studies. Vanessa Ratten & João J. Ferreira’s edited volume Sport Entrepreneurship and Innovation (Routledge 2017) can possibly claim the spot of key text in this unplowed field, but according to our reviewer, Daniel Bjärsholm, its shortcomings may well prevent that.

Cross-country skiing as a team sport

At the World Championships in cross country skiing in Lathi, Finland, the 50K race was won by Canadian Alex Harvey, with a Russian in second place and a Finn in third. The apparent strategy of the Norwegian coach didn’t work, and in a blogpost Arve Hjelseth problematizes the decision to let one man, the non-sprinter Sundby, try and split the field. This is Jeremy Crump’s translation of Hjelseth’s post.

Ethical standards of fair play – the basis of modern sport

This paper by three Masters students at Saint Petersburg State University offers a discussion of the theoretical basis of the ethical foundations of sport, expressed in the principles of fair play, with emphasis on the articulation between cultural-moral personhood in sport and the increasingly anti-humanist features of contemporary, institutionalized professional sport (sub-)cultures.

This book performs a vital service for critical sport scholars

“As manna from heaven”; that is one way of describing the arrival to the book stores of Sport, Protest and Globalisation: Stopping Play edited by Jon Dart and Stephen Wagg (Palgrave Macmillan). Our reviewer is Russell Holden, and besides noting a couple of omissions, he is thoroughly pleased, nay, enthusiastic over this anthology and its critical stance in relation to sports.
